Canadian astronaut in orbit over honorary degree
Canadian astronaut Bob Thirsk has become the first man to receive a college diploma in the field yesterday – and the joy turned into orbit to show your appreciation.
Speaking via video link from the International Space Station, Thirsk call varied in conditions of weightlessness, as he accepted the “honor” of the University of Calgary.
“When I was a student at the University of Calgary 33 years ago, I had a dream of one day flying in space, become an astronaut. Many dreams that I had not been achieved, but the little that has a great feeling. ”
Thirsk delighted his audience of friends, teachers and students of the Earth floating in a jumping show their reaction to the honorary doctorate in law from the University Chancellor Joanne Cuthbertson.
“In other words, I was Head Over Heels,” he said.
Thirsk, who was attacked May 27 in orbit aboard a Russian Soyuz rocket, congratulated Canada to do a good job educating its young people, but urged governments and the private sector to continue investing in education, research and development.
“Education is the key to dreams into reality,” he said.
The first Canadian to participate in a long-term space flight, Thirsk is on an expedition of six months. He is one of six astronauts to conduct experiments that will lay the groundwork for future missions to the Moon and Mars.
University of Calgary, Harvey Weingarten, President Thirsk said he made his “alma mater” and the country proud.
“You are an excellent ambassador for the University of Calgary, a credit to his family elders and a source of inspiration for all of us in Canada,” he said.
Thirsk received his undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering at Calgary in 1976 and received two master’s degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a medical degree from McGill University.
